After a trial run in Canada that’s been ongoing since May, Instagram announced on July 17 that it would be hiding publicly visible likes from users in six additional countries—Australia, Brazil, Ireland, Italy, Japan, and New Zealand—in the name of shifting away from the app’s emphasis on popularity. And while its “like ban” is only in an exploratory phase in certain regions, and Instagram is so far declining to comment on its plans for the U.S. market, the internet has been freaking out, rattling everyone from influencers to social media analysts to companies that peddle likes.

The change is relatively minor: In affected markets, where Instagram would once list the number of likes for a post—“Buy any Instagram Followers,” for example—the app will now simply display it as “Liked by @AdAge and others.” Account owners will still be able to see exactly how many likes their own posts have, and if users tap “others,” as is the case currently, they will still be able to see a detailed breakdown of a post’s likes and could count them manually. 

“I think [hiding likes] is going to provide more value to folks creating content, and consumers are going to be able to get more meaningful interactions,” says Nick Cicero, VP of strategy at real-time video intelligence platform Conviva, noting that businesses have increasingly begun to move away from using likes as a tool to measure reach and engagement. “Hopefully this starts to deter the business of selling fake influence,” he adds.

The internet is crawling with companies hawking likes and followers to seemingly drum up influence for your Instagram page, all with names built on upbeat social buzzwords (e.g., blast, Famoid, StormLikes), and all promising to be better than their competitors. “Our likes and followers are authentic,” almost every company says, in one way or another, on its FAQ page. “Other platforms use fake accounts and bots.”

While offerings vary from site to site, most like-sellers promote two distinct products: one-time purchases, usually starting from around 99 cents per 100 likes, and expansive monthly packages that promise likes, followers and story views with customized delivery and automatic renewal.

“Before we started this business, we thought that most of our customers would be business pages, but we were really surprised because 90 percent of our customers are personal pages,” says Alex Follovery, founder of Follovery, an online platform to buy Instagram likes and followers. “Most of them are 20-to-30 years old, both men and women.”

Followers say he created his namesake service after encountering several clients, in his past life working at a social media agency, who didn’t want to spend money on sponsored ads and measuring engagement—all they wanted was results in the form of likes and follows. 

Back in 2012, Forbes reported the going rate for 500 likes was $35, as advertised by the company Buy Instagram Likes; today, many sellers offer that same amount for less than $5. Followers declined to disclose how companies like his acquire and deliver genuine likes from real manned accounts, as claimed. 

“Unfortunately, some people call our business ‘dirty,’ but we wouldn't call it that. We see only a ‘tool,’ and the way of using it is on our customer’s conscience,” says Follovery, who believes that Instagram’s decision to hide likes may be a way for the app to generate more revenue. “There is a huge influencer marketing industry and Instagram can kill it with their decision.”

When the initial like-hiding roll-out for the Canadian market was first announced at Facebook’s F8 developer conference in late April, the company explained its move as a potential strategy to combat social media-related anxiety, online bullying and the perceived pressure to rack up as many likes as possible. Potential repercussions for social media influencers weren’t mentioned.

Instagram may have reason to be concerned, though: According to a 2017 survey published by the U.K.’s Royal Society for Public Health, 14-to-24-year-olds found Instagram to be the social media platform with the worst impact on mental health, reporting that it negatively affected their sleep, body image and “FOMO,” or fear of missing out.

Social Media Want You to Buy Followers

A New York Times story about a company, Devumi, that has sold more than 200 million fake followers to second-tier celebrities and "influencers," has made a big splash; New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has tweeted that his office has opened an investigation into Devumi's "impersonation and deception." But the firm is just a tiny outfit with an office above a Mexican restaurant in West Palm Beach, Florida. What really needs to be investigated is to what extent social networks' user bases are fake and what benefits the giant companies that own them -- Facebook, Google, Twitter -- draw from the widespread fakery.

While The New York Times did a stellar job investigating Devumi, the Florida firm doesn't appear to be a particularly sophisticated player in the large market for social media fraud. It acquired Twitter bots wholesale from shadowy operations like Peakerr, Cheap Panel and YTbot and then retailed them with a huge markup to people too lazy to source the bots on their own.

The market, meanwhile, is large, diverse and often bizarre. Marketplaces exist for Facebook likes and fake reviews (University of Iowa's Shehroze Farooqi and collaborators explored a big one, SEOClerks.com, in an April 2017 paper). People create internet-of-things botnets that use routers and smart TVs infected with malware to register and exploit fake social network accounts. Canadian cybersecurity researcher Masarah Paquet-Clouston and collaborators documented the activity of such a botnet, Linux/Moose, in a July 2017 paper. 

In April 2017, Juan Echeverria and Shi Zhou at University College London described a network of more than 350,000 Twitter bots that only tweeted quotes from novels based on Star Wars movies. The bots kept a low profile and helped bloat follower counts for years. Even the singer Lady Gaga counted 14,315 of the Star Wars bots among her more than 70 million followers. How much of the rest of that huge audience is fake? It would take dozens of investigations like Echeverria and Zhou's, or The New York Times's, to find out.

The Devumi story focuses on Twitter, the easiest network to exploit because of its purposely lax identification policies. Twitter followers are the cheapest on the black market. Devumi -- which, according to The New York Times, charged $17 per 1,000 followers buy -- was more expensive than most of the competition.

YouTube subscribers command the highest prices because, thanks to the way YouTube shares ad revenue with content creators, they are potentially the most lucrative.

The most difficult part of launching a social media bot is registering a fake account. On some of the networks, a bot needs to cheat Captcha robot detection. The registration barriers are never high enough that it would become prohibitively expensive for the bot farms to jump over them. Terracotta Army

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Terracotta Army is a collection of terracotta sculptures depicting the armies of Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China. It is a form of funerary art buried with the emperor in 210–209 BCE with the purpose of protecting the emperor in his afterlife.


The figures, dating from approximately the late third century BCE, were discovered in 1974 by local farmers in Lintong County, outside Xi'an, Shaanxi, China. The figures vary in height according to their roles, with the tallest being the generals. The figures include warriors, chariots and horses. Estimates from 2007 were that the three pits containing the Terracotta Army held more than 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses, and 150 cavalry horses, the majority of which remained buried in the pits near Qin Shi Huang's mausoleum. Other terracotta non-military figures were found in other pits, including officials, acrobats, strongmen, and musicians.

History

The mound where the tomb is located

The construction of the tomb was described by historian Sima Qian (145–90 BCE) in his most noted work Shiji, written a century after the mausoleum's completion. Work on the mausoleum began in 246 BCE soon after Emperor Qin (then aged 13) ascended the throne, and the project eventually involved 700,000 workers. Geographer Li Daoyuan, writing six centuries after the first emperor's death, recorded in Shui Jing Zhu that Mount Li was a favored location due to its auspicious geology, "famed for its jade mines, its northern side was rich in gold, and its southern side rich in beautiful jade; the first emperor, covetous of its fine reputation, therefore chose to be buried there". Sima Qian wrote that the first emperor was buried with palaces, towers, officials, valuable artifacts and wondrous objects. According to this account, 100 flowing rivers were simulated using mercury, and above them, the ceiling was decorated with heavenly bodies below which were the features of the land. Some translations of this passage refer to "models" or "imitations"; however, those words were not used in the original text, which makes no mention of the terracotta army. High levels of mercury were found in the soil of the tomb mound, giving credence to Sima Qian's account. Later historical accounts suggested that the complex and tomb itself had been looted by Xiang Yu, a contender for the throne after the death of the first emperor. However, there are indications that the tomb itself may not have been plundered.

Excavated in 1976, Pit 2 stands about 20 meters north to Pit 1. As the highlight of the whole mausoleum, it uncovers the mystery of the ancient army array. It consists of four units, measuring 94 meters east to west and 84 meters south to north and 5 meters deep., forming a 6000 sq. meter built-up area.

The first unit contains rows of kneeling and standing archers; the second one is a chariot war array; the third unit consists of mixed forces with infantry, chariot and trooper standing in rectangular array; and the last one includes numerous troopers holding weapons. The four units form a rigorous battle array.

Pit 3 - Represents the Command Post

Vault Three is the smallest one. There are only 68 terracotta warriors figures, many of which are without heads. It's obvious that Vault Three represents the command post, as all the figures are officials.

The two bronze carriages displayed in the hall were discovered 20 meters from the west side of the Tomb of Qin Shihuang in December 1980, and were elaborately restored before exhibition.

The carriages have about 3,400 parts each and were driven by four horses. The second one is 3.17meters long and 1.06 meters high. The bronze horses vary from 65 cm to 67 cm high and 120 cm long. Each weighs 1,234 kg in total.

They were mainly made of bronze, but there were 1,720 pieces of golden and silver ornaments, weighting 7 kg, on each carriage. The carriages were so well-made, and so vivid, that they boast being the best-preserved and having the highest rank among the earliest known bronze relics in China. These chariots are the biggest pieces of ancient bronzeware ever found in the world.

HOW TO ATTACH A TARP TO A LEAKING, STORM-DAMAGED ROOF

In the aftermath of a hurricane, tornado, severe storm, falling tree limbs, or other cause of roof damage; it’s important to report the damage to your insurance company as soon as possible and take plenty of pictures.

To minimize water damage in the interim before long-term repairs can be made, cover the damaged part of the roof tarp with a tarpaulin. Here’s how to go about it.

To secure a tarp to your roof:

• Find the source of the roof leak.
• Stretch a tarp flat on the roof.
• Extend the top edge of the tarp over the ridge of the roof.
• Positions several 1×2 pieces of lumber on the tarp running vertically down the slope of the roof.
• Attach the 1x2s through the tarp and into the roof decking with eight-penny nails about every 16 inches.
• Use felt roofing nails with a plastic washer to help secure the tarp to the roof.
